Alex sent me a direct message (DM) saying that someone should make and album called "Variant of Interest / Variant of Concern" where one side of the album was "nice and pretty" and the other side was "concerning." I suggested that if he gave me the song titles I would deliver the album. A few weeks later after questioning each others ability to follow through, Alex emailed me a list of 5 titles. I promised the album by the end of of the month, which at the time was about 19 days away.

I then promised the album by the end of the month for about 6 subsequent months, and in the meantime starting inviting friends to write, record and slowly make progress. Most of the songs were written in just one session, allowing ourselves no room for second guessing. At some point, while providing Alex with a progress report, he asked if I had googled any of the song titles yet, implying that they actually referenced real events. I had not, and made an effort not to, allowing us to create our own visions of Hamilton's one rule, a Lincoln, Montana ski resort and/or bison refuge and several takes on what exactly a Wump World is.

The variants of interest were meant to be more or less inside the box acoustic vocal music and the variants of concern were meant to be as sonically and lyrically concerning as possible. In many cases, the variants of interest turned out to be somewhat concerning and some of the more interesting moments in this collection of songs happen among the variants of concern.
